SciEye: The SciLands Are Moving! But not Spaceport Bravo

October 12, 2009

SPNN News, Spindrift isle, the SciLands, Second Life – Your SciEye columnist says the SciLands are moving again, this time next to the adjacent University of Texas [UT] education continent.  Today, Monday, October  12th, is  the scheduled day for the Lin, represented by Dee Linden, to lift and land 62 of our science, technology, engineering, and math isles.

[Update 7pm SLTMonday Oct 12th]

“We’ve moved!
[18:27]  Dee Linden: (Saved Mon Oct 12 18:30:58 2009) 63 regions moved
today, Paradox

Many many thanks to Dee for saving us from 63-ticket purgatory!-Paradox”

[Update Tues 10am SLT - the Map has updated!]

Your LMs [landmarks] will still be good, but you will have to manually revisit and reenter any of your Profile personal Picks again.

More updates as events unfold …

[Disclaimer: I'm the SciLands POC (Person/Point of Contact) to both UT and LindenLab for this move.]

In a related story, the International Spaceflight Museum [ISM] is leaving Spaceport Bravo behind in the SciLands move, and announced that it is for sale by auction.  “Kirra Ball donated the isle and 2 years rent/tier, but after that wonderful donation ran out in the spring of 2009, visitor and volunteer  staff donations were never   enough to pay for Spaceport Bravo.  It is with the greatest reluctance that the ISM Board of Directors voted this weekend to put the isle up for sale,” is my  comment as ISM Director and President.

Gus Plissken /SL name is handling the transaction, with an ISM BoDirectors  waiver: “Resolved, that Fred Fuchs and/or Firesabre Consulting be authorized to act as agent for the ISM Corporation in marketing and selling the sim, Spaceport Bravo, and should be indemnified against any claims of conflict of interest for the purposes of performing this service for the Board.”

SciEye’s 1st stop in my tour of the SciLands is the epynomous Science Friday island.

Science Friday is a wide-ranging weekly science news and interviews radio show on, yes, Fridays back in RL (Real Life). Join us in Second Life at 11am SLT!

Here’s larger versions of the same 3 photos of the SL version of the show at FlickR.  [update Jan 18th - I've added 5 pics of the 3rd home island show as well.]  I can’t offer a tour of Science Friday island yet, because the terraforming landshapers and exhibit builders are still designing on this newly-birthed island.   Here’s the archived podcast of the first Science Friday show co-hosted in RL & SL: Virtual Worlds, Virtual Lives, broadcast on Friday August 31st, 2007.  All of their shows are archived at their website.

The SciEye column’s next SciLands stop is Mars, in Exploratorium.  I’ve gotten word that an asteroid is inbound …

How to Pick Up Science Chicks!

January 12, 2008

If only I’d known …  :)  National Public Radio’s [NPR] Science Friday show came to Second Life at the end of last summer, Aug 31st; they liked the experience so much on Science School Island that they bought their own island and joined the SciLands.  I’m a regular attendee, partly for the show’s guests and partly for the witty and erudite inworld audience’s chatter during the show.

Yesterday a newcomer to the audience asked about social opportunities – and got a rapid response.  :)
[12:19]  Emil Gaffer: is this a good place to pick up science chicks?
[12:19]  Bjorlyn Loon: THANK YOU AND SUPPORT: Thank you to Ira and the Science Friday staff for being here in Second Life, and thanks to all of you for attending! Please support NPR, and also the Science School, which make this event possible.
[12:19]  Jasmin Loire: Emil – Sure, just order them from Carolina Biological Supply. You’ll need an incubator too.

Bjorlyn commented that her remark made her seem [fussy, or officious].  :)  I disagreed, saying I’d left it in to show this was indeed SciFri, and it was a good reminder to support the show inworld.

Welcome to Spindrift & the SciLands!

January 4, 2008

Spindrift Island is my SciLands news blog.  My SciEye column will be roving the SciLands and SL to seek out new science, tech, and engineering sims and pixels.

I have a separate personal blog, Paradoxically. It deals with space construction in RL and SL, both news and cultural representations [yes, science fiction] past and present. Other aspects of both rl and sl are there too, like the Peapod.com PriceWatch and baseball.
